The Bunker
The Bunker
Barcelona was the first city to be systematically bombarded against the civilian population in a war during the Spanish Civil War by the German and Italian air armies, so the Generalitat de Catalunya commissioned Ramon Perera, a 31-year-old engineer, to design a system that would allow the population to take refuge from air strikes.
About 1,400 were built in Barcelona alone, it was carried out thanks to the collaboration of the entire population, so it is easy to find these shelters around the city.
This photographic project presents one of these “bunkers” built in Barcelona. Our characters live underground, anguish and loneliness are reflected in the images despite trying to lead a normal life.
The longing for the light and the outdoors becomes apparent.
All the images are made in the same shelter and reflect different situations and characters. Each one tells a story.
