Hostile Environment
Hostile Environment
Providing adequate rescue to people in distress can often be a challenge. But the challenge becomes demanding when rescue must be carried out in a hostile environment: mountain trails, rock walls and other places out of reach for emergency vehicles. I have documented some moments of these special operations in the Italian Alps.
1: while waiting for the rescue helicopter to land, a mountain rescue technician (MRT) observes his colleagues at work on a rock wall
2: an injured hiker is winched to safety aboard the helicopter
3: taking on board a patient on a stretcher requires the crew to be trained to work as a team
4: rescue operation in a gorge: rescuers must be winched down to the ground
5: a MRT, after being winched down close to the injured, climbs up a gully to reach them
6: helicopter entering the gorge to retrieve the first person to be evacuated
7: a MRT observes the helicopter evacuating the first patient
8: once mission is completed, we take a moment to contemplate"our"mountain
