Auschwitz II - Birkenau.

It was a place of inhumanity. Of course you can read an infinite amount about it - but when you are there it is quiet.

My visit took place on a glorious autumn day. It was surreal. The contrast couldn't have been stronger. On the one hand the golden autumn sun and the fleecy clouds - on the other hand barbed wire, blown gas chambers, barracks and tracks on which countless people drove to their deaths. A shameful feeling of emptiness. Like a vacuum feeling.

I want to reflect this surreal state of place and feeling in my pictures. I am aware that this could be difficult terrain. But the official side welcomes the fact that pictures are also used to refer to this gruesome section of our history.
