Resting Giants
Resting Giants
This young male walrus had strewn himself across a small ice floe in the Barents Sea off the coast of the Sor-Spitsbergen National Park, Svalbard. He was completely isolated and alone except for the two huge luminous blue icebergs behind him. Travelling in a zodiac as part of a group trip, we slowed down on our approach to him as not to scare him off. The ripples from the boat spread out in from of us in the waxy water and reflected the deep grey-blue sky that was underlined by the morning sun. Lying down in the zodiac to get as close to eye level as I could, I waited until the walrus was in between the icebergs to create some symmetry in the image.
