Quarantine in Queens
Quarantine in Queens
In March, 2020, I was living back in Queens after years working on comedy scripts in Los Angeles, when my neighborhood became the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak. I found myself trapped in a 700-square-foot, one bathroom apartment with my 86 year old mother and Sophia, my ex-wife from Los Angeles. This situation was more bizarre than any sitcom I’ve ever written. We couldn't go out to shop for food, and I couldn't take a bath without my mother or my ex-wife walking in on me. I had to find a new way to express my creativity, and a new way to stay sane. A project evolved, using writing, staged photography, and self-portraiture to document the humor and the drama of my family’s confinement together. "Quarantine in Queens" became a commentary on caregiving, love, and responsibility. The project continues eight months later, as the three of us remain in the same apartment in Flushing, NY and our neighborhood is a Red Zone once again.
