Quartiere 5 (Suburbs 5)
Quartiere 5 (Suburbs 5)
With the increase in tourism in Florence, Italy, the flight numbers intensified until 1984 when the infrastructure underwent a series of adjustments to cater for its substantial growth.
This extension came at the expense of an urban area located near the airport, the "N5 suburbs", the most populated area in the city, boasting 40000 inhabitants. During take off and landing the planes are a mere 70metres from the houses, giving rise to a series of acoustic and environmental pollution several concerns to the people who lives in there. Currently, a new runway is planned that could partially solve the problem but many criticisms have arisen from this idea, whereby the runway would extend 2km along the flat green land of Sesto Fiorentino. This green area has committees set up who's purpose is to defend it.
"Quartiere 5" is a project aimed at documenting the daily affairs of this issue, in particular the noise pollution, for which there is still no obvious solution.
