Asking for it
Asking for it
“Asking for it’ is a 2019 series of completely original portraits, published in the UK in 2020. It was comprehensively researched as part of a 12 month MA project and supported by a specialist rape charity.
The work was a response to a woman’s suicide, following the acquittal of her alleged rapist. She was made to hold-up her underwear three times in court.
Each 'mug shot' represents a different decade and multiple real-life stories. Actors, make-up and authentic techniques (wet plate collodian, 5 x 4 and 35mm film) were used alongside digital to create authenticity.
The HM Crown Prosecution Report (UK, 2019) detailed 58,657 allegations of rape but only 1925 successful prosecutions. Tackling victim blaming is vital to increase reporting and conviction rates. Moreover, unprecedented levels of calls to helplines in 2020 ‘lockdowns’ highlight the prevalence of domestic/sexual violence.
The series aims to drive social change and challenge historical/current tendencies victim blame
