Magnificent Anemones & Red Sea anemonefishes
Magnificent Anemones & Red Sea anemonefishes
This beautiful pinnacle of healthy hard coral is covered with Magnificent anemones with their bright red "skirts" hosting Red Sea anemonefishes among others . These are endemic to the Red Sea. Scientists are interested in studying coral reefs here due to the higher salinity & heat - hoping to find solutions for other reefs. While conducting Reef Fish Surveys in the area, we watched the antics of these fiercely protective fish - let me tell you, "Nemo" has teeth and is fearless - nipping at both camera & fingers. We start by moving slowly and carefully closer - first selecting a male & female "family". As we come closer, they dart in to hide inside the anemones (which are animals with stinging tentacles themselves) - then they slowly peek out and become more and more brave. We tried to tell them our fingers weren't on the menu but ....ah, well. We finally head home - small fish 1, humans 0.
