An ode to reef life
An ode to reef life
Hard corals, creators of reefs, set the scene. Each colony one organism, one animal, starting as a single polyp, dividing itself – over and over – slowly growing into colonies of various shapes, struggling for space and light with other species on the reef. Looking more closely reveals small creatures, delicate and beautiful, finding a safe home inside these corals. The reef is a colourful wonderland, not only full of fish but providing habitats with food and shelter down to the smallest level: from shrimp to nudibranch on tunicate. Coral reefs remain full of mysteries, hotspots of global biodiversity, complex and fragile ecosystems where patterns and routines of different species interlace: Perfectly orchestrated and ever-evolving, counting on specialisation as well as collaboration. Every creature has its function and niche and so do we.

Photography fascinated me already early on in life, to be able to document as well to stage or to spin stories around a picture. Travelling opened up new horizons and inspired my photography, especially nature, but also human traces therein, as well as my studies of Geography, Management of Environment and Politics. When I started diving it felt like a whole new universe, another dimension suddenly revealed itself. So much to discover! I needed time to perfect my diving skills, to study the underwater realm and to save up for photo equipment to allow me to share this weird and wonderful world with others. After all: We protect what we understand and love – be it in or outside the ocean.
Only recently I started to have the courage to present my vision to others, like on our own website and social media. Devocean Pictures is a joint project which combines videos, photos and blog entries to share our passion for nature and conservation. "Our actions affect others, affect the world."
