Holding Tradition

Jilti is part of a Kazakh Mongolian Family in the Altai Mountains. Eagle hunting has been part of their family tradition for generations. Tobai, the grandfather, taught Shokhan (one of his sons), and in turn, Shokhan is now teaching his other daughter Damel. Although Jilti is not being trained to be an eagle huntress, she does share some of the responsibility of taking care of the eagles. In this photograph, she was sitting just outside the home waiting for the rest of the family to bring out the cut pieces of rabbit.
