An ordinary day along the Mekong River
An ordinary day along the Mekong River
In the Mekong Delta, southern Vietnam, the sun hasn’t risen yet, and we already see the first boats sailing in the direction of the closest floating market. Along the river, the women appear to be the protagonists. They are the ones managing the large boats selling fruits, driving the “floating bar” and serving the Pho soup for breakfast, and with smaller boats, they drive locals and tourists through these marvelous waterways.
Time seems stalled along the Mekong river. The surrounding villages are homes to fishermen and farmers. We see a man cutting a jack-fruit to share with us, while an old woman is resting on a hammock, waiting for her grandchildren. A volunteer Doctor proudly shows us his big shelves filled with medicinal herbs, and not far from here, a group of friends invites us to lunch with them.
The warmth shown to us was immense across all the villages. We savor the homemade pancakes and soak ourselves in the hospitality of the people of this magical delta.
