Luminarias
Luminarias
On the eve of the feast of San Antón, patron saint of animals, the inhabitants of San Bartolomé de Pinares (Ávila, Spain) mobilize to light the Luminarias, a series of bonfires over which a group of horsemen will jump with their mounts, in order to purify the horses in an ancestral rite that is believed to have its roots in the 18th century, when during a period of epidemics, attempts began to purify animals through fire and smoke to ward off disease.
