Dignity and Pain
Dignity and Pain
It's not easy to convey the feelings that overwhelmed me when I met this person. We had been operating for several days in Senegal with the NGO Azúl en Acción, which specializes primarily in ophthalmic surgery, and of which I am a part as a plastic surgeon. I was informed that a patient had come for an evaluation. She entered the room and remained standing and covered. The interpreter informed me that she had come to assess whether anything could be done for her condition. When I asked what it was, she slowly lifted the cloth covering her face and showed me her profile without saying anything. I stood up, examined her carefully, took my notes, and slowly explained to her through the interpreter what we could improve with the means at our disposal. She nodded silently, allowed me to take the photo, and re-covered herself. Although I have many more photos, I consider this first one a true PORTRAIT, in which she conveyed her presence, her dignity, and her pain with incredible power.
