Drifting Shadows: space debris
Drifting Shadows: space debris
The space around Earth is no longer the pristine void we imagine. Increasingly crowded orbits accumulate debris: defunct satellites, rocket fragments, and shards from past collisions. ESA (2025) counts about 37,000 tracked objects over 10 cm, over 26,000 of which are debris, plus more than a million between 1 and 10 cm and countless smaller, invisible particles that, at 8 km/s, can damage satellites and scientific instruments. Debris also affects the night sky, disrupting astronomical observations and scientific studies. Satellites remain essential for communication, navigation, weather, and research—without them, many services would fail. Monitoring Earth’s orbit is now a global priority, using radar, telescopes, lasers, and AI to predict collisions. Italy stands out in Europe with observation programs and start-ups developing tracking and debris removal technologies. Protecting space is vital to continue benefiting from it without compromising its future.
