Cocooned in Her Thoughts
Cocooned in Her Thoughts
Cocooned in Her Thoughts is an experimental photographic work examining vulnerability as a psychological and spatial condition. The photograph is presented in a reclaimed historic frame, used as an integral component of the work rather than a neutral support. The frame creates a three-dimensional illusion in which the image appears recessed into the wall, recalling the contemplative spatial logic of religious icons and allowing the work to assert a distinct presence. The final framed work measures 74 × 37 cm.
Within this constructed depth, the nude figure adopts a posture of self-containment rather than exposure. Suspended in water, her curled form evokes a cocoon, while the surrounding environment functions as both physical enclosure and psychological boundary. Her closed eyes and calm expression suggest a withdrawal from the external world, positioning the image as a meditation on interiority, stillness, and the threshold between vulnerability and protection.
Author
Gilpin is a contemporary artist working primarily with photography, recognised for his distinctive exploration of the modern nude. His practice is intuitive and experimental, using natural light, colour, and form to create work that is painterly, restrained, and deeply human. His images prioritise presence and atmosphere over spectacle.
Trained in photography and figure drawing, Gilpin’s early studies were shaped by classical methods and close mentorship, informing a sustained engagement with the human form. He values singularity over mass production, favouring limited works and maintaining distance from trends that might dilute artistic intent.
Gilpin’s work has received growing international recognition. He exhibited in Barcelona in 2021 and in Paris in 2025. Over the past 24 months, his work has received more than forty-two international awards and distinctions from leading international judging panels.
