Having speared a small fish, an anhinga bursts through the water’s surface in Brazil’s Pantanal wetland. The evening sun paints its neck in molten gold, perfectly offsetting the silver shimmer of its catch. Dark waters, shaded by overgrowing vegetation, form a deep, contrasting background.

Fabian has lost his heart to the wild and has been using the camera to share this passion since he was seven years old. His running project "Once Upon a Time in the Wild" is both love letter and eulogy to the world’s astonishing animals and the wild places they inhabit — unapologetic in its display of nature’s beauty, yet tinged with melancholy about our destructive influence on the foundations of life on Earth.
