Dune with Tree, Sossusvlieu

The Sossusvlieu is a clay and salt pan located among high red sand dunes in the Namib desert that is part of the Namib-Naukluft National Park. Visiting the area in the spring of 2025, I brought my Canon R5 that had been converted to take photographs in the infrared spectrum using various infrared filters (665 and 772 nm) . Color photography of the area captures spectacular views, but I preferred the abstractness of the black and white infrared shots that I took over a period of several days. This was my favorite, caught at the time of the day when the late afternoon sun created a geometry and tonality that riveted my attention.

I am an amateur photographer who rarely enters competitions, though has had several photographs selected for exhibition in the competitive Maine Photographic Show. I am a retired lawyer and law professor living in Maine. I received Honorable Mentions in the Annual Photography Awards for 2022 and 2023. While I am primarily a landscape photographer, a trip to Bhutan in 2024 has helped to refocus attention on photographs of people and foreign cultures.
