The clay pan where these dead camel thorn trees now stand was created by a flood and then drought caused by the Namibian dunes closing off the water source, thereby killing the trees almost 700 years. ago. We entered the valley early on a May 2025 morning during a significant dust storm that made photography a challenge that was compounded by numerous tourists visiting the valley to see the stark forms of the trees against the surrounding dunes. As the wind subsided later in the morning, the sun's angle in the sky created geometically shaped shadows on the pan and surrounding dunes. Their intersecting and adjacent lines in turn created abstract scenes like this one, whose form and flatness reminded me of some of Henri Matisse's famous cut-outs.

I am an amateur photographer who rarely enters competitions, though has had several photographs selected for exhibition in the competitive Maine Photographic Show. I am a retired lawyer and law professor living in Maine. I received Honorable Mentions in the Annual Photography Awards for 2022 and 2023. While I am primarily a landscape photographer, a trip to Bhutan in 2024 has helped to refocus attention on photographs of people and foreign cultures.
