FENQIANG LIU
The Silent Cry of Patagonia

During my hiking trip to Patagonia in October, I chose to look beyond the region’s towering mountain peaks and instead focus on the silent remains of burned forests. This black-and-white series captures the trees left behind by the 2011 fire in Torres del Paine National Park, which was sparked by a tourist who carelessly started a fire while burning toilet paper in a restricted wooded area. The fire consumed more than 42,000 acres within the protected park, and countless animals perished in its wake. Because the native forests grow slowly, the scars of the fire remain etched across the landscape, and full ecological recovery may take decades. I hope these images remind viewers—and travelers everywhere—of the importance of respecting nature and following the rules that protect it.

Fenqiang Liu began studying drawing while attending middle school in China. During college, he took an interest in photography. After finishing his BA degree in Chinese literature, Fenqiang worked as a cameraman for geographic educational videos. He later came to the United States to obtain his MFA in Cinema and Photography at Southern Illinois University. After graduation, Fenqiang worked as a computer animator and motion graphic designer. He and his wife later opened a business that provides behavior analysis services for children with autism. In recent years, Fenqiang has devoted his time to nature photography and won multiple international awards, including Creative Photo Awards, MonoVisions Awards, Fine Art Photo Awards, All About Photo Awards, Chromatic Awards, Monochrome Awards, IPA, and PX3 Awards.
Fenqiang’s cultural influence from both the East and the West, his artistic background, and his photography mastery allow him to express his thoughts and emotions in a unique style.
