METAMORPHOSIS

In Japan, there has long been a sensibility of projecting human presence and emotion onto nature. Forests and trees are regarded as sacred, and at times become objects of reverence, fear, or emotional reflection. Forests undergo seasonal metamorphosis, yet this process involves more than simple beauty; it is often accompanied by feelings of unease, solitude, and at times sorrow or anger. The question arises as to whether these emotions emerge from a natural environment being damaged by human activity, or whether we are projecting our own response to a society in metamorphosis onto the forest itself.
