Freight units lined up in the docks of the Port of Cairnryan on Scotland's West Coast, waiting to be loaded onto Ferries bound for Larne, in Northern Ireland. The shipping link between the mainland UK and Northern Ireland is vital, providing almost all of the territory's consumables and export routes.

Social and political stability on the island relies heavily on just three shipping routes remaining open, viable and operational. These have been tested significantly in recent years by the political changes of Brexit, economic and social influences of the Covid 19 pandemic, and the ongoing threat of climate changing causing ever-stronger and more frequent storms in the Irish Sea.
