Portraits of Californians at Home

If my “New Yorker” book was the result of gaining numerous people’s trust , these residents were willing protagonists. They welcomed me into their bedrooms, garages, and patios. Like their Manhattan counterparts, these folks posed with confidence. They lay on couches, sit at pianos, dress up or stay casual, and show off their cherished items. As was true with the making of my New Yorkers book, a story unfolded with these Californians at home. The cliché of palm trees and sunny interiors was there for sure, but that was only the first layer of the onion. And while I did have the good fortune of photographing some well knowns, I also found others who had redefined their goals as time went by. If their dreams fell short they just looked for new ones, because the same shared spirit that brought them all here in the first place, shines on.

Sally Davies is a photographer and the author of two books New Yorkers and California Dreamers. She is also the photographer of the acclaimed McDonalds Happy Meal project (1.75 million online hits).  Her photographs are in the permanent collection at the Museum of the City of New York (her street photographs and the entire collection of portraits from the book New Yorkers) and the NYC 9/11 Museum. Her photo archive is now housed in the Downtown Collection of Fales Library at NYU. Her photographs have been featured in the New York Times, PDN online, The Huffington Post, Photolife Magazine, The Guardian, and The New York Post.
Sally has exhibited twice at the Museum of the City of New York. In 2020 her street photography was included in “From Stuyvesant to Sid Vicious,” and in 2023 her New Yorkers at home portraits were included in “New York Now: Home.”
She took Allen Ginsberg’s old apartment when she moved from Canada to New York in 1983, and she still lives in NYC with her dog Bun.
