Chairs of Egypt
Chairs of Egypt
"Chairs" delves into the symbolism embedded within the humble chairs that patiently line the sidewalks of Egypt's various towns and neighborhoods. These communal objects, utilized by whoever is in need and owned by no one, take center stage in my exploration of themes surrounding cultural alienation, the transient nature of humanity, and the experience of visitor-hood. The chairs are shown as they are—void of people yet inherently welcoming—portraying solitude as both a choice of further separation and alienation from culture as well as a mode of observation and thus inclusion within culture. This uncertainty serves as an analogy to the alienation of cultural displacement, while offering comfort in the knowledge of the continuity of communal history.
