Chapel in Oberbechingen by Architect Frank Lattke
Chapel in Oberbechingen by Architect Frank Lattke
Seven renowned architects built contemporary chapels in pure wood construction for the Denzel Foundation in the Bavarian Danube Valley. The chapel by Frank Lattke near Oberbechingen stands prominently as a square monolith on wide fields. The building is reminiscent of old barns and reinterprets them in a contemporary way. The interior is accessed via a timber frame wall that pivots inwards, which models the narrow, high space with minimal light. The diagonals of the rafter roof form delicate wooden compartments inside that are reminiscent of Gothic arches and lead the eye upwards. The combination of narrowness, height and design reduction makes this architecture a place of silence, beauty and contemplation.
