Final Call for Boarding
The charter planes and scheduled jets of Cyprus Airways once landed here: at Nicosia International Airport. But ever since flight operations had to be suspended overnight in 1974, there has been dead silence following a brief armed conflict. Once the largest airport in Cyprus, it is located in the center of the island, just twelve kilometers west of the metropolis of Nicosia. Today, the buffer zone that has separated the two parts of the country since 1974 runs through the area: the south with the Republic of Cyprus and the northern part, which has been known as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus - a country that is not recognized by the international community with the exception of Turkey. The now abandoned airport symbolizes the divided country.
