Arming the Left

In the last 5-10 years, marginalized groups, particularly BIPOC and members of the LGBTQ+ community, have struggled with more frequent acts of targeted violence against them and their communities. Often, these attacks have come from actors on the far right, such as the Proud Boys, the 3%-ers, and Patriot Front. Many members of the victimized identities wonder where they can turn to learn to defend themselves, as the police often do not intervene quickly enough, if at all, in these violent incidents. Furthermore, traditional American gun culture is dominated by conservative white men, and is commonly associated with the far right, so going to a regular gun range or learning from a class lead by the National Rifle Association is out of the question for most members of these marginalized groups. Will Allen-DuPraw is a photojournalist and documentarian based in the DC area. He recently completed his Master’s degree is New Media Photojournalism at the Corcoran School of the Arts & Design in May, 2023. During his undergrad years at Brown University, he created his own major, called Visual Storytelling. After a 2-year stint in Santa Cruz, California, he moved to Charleston, South Carolina, where he built a career in commercial video production. While he still enjoys commercial work, he has since moved back to his hometown of Takoma Park, MD, and is committed to the path of visual journalism and documentary photo/video projects.
Will primarily covers topics relating to injustice, identity, and oppression. He also enjoys exploring the odd corners of the human condition. His mission is to use his camera to highlight and facilitate experiences of empathy and the feeling of being understood.
