We are experiencing a period of transition, both ecologically and digitally. Fossil fuels are being replaced by renewable energy sources, and many aspects of our daily and work lives are becoming digitized. This transition, crucial for addressing climate change, comes with a cost: the raw materials needed for the construction of these new technologies. Those considered at the highest risk of supply shortage are Rare Earth Elements (REEs), crucial for key applications such as wind turbines, electric motors, and electronics like smartphones and computers. Currently, Europe is entirely dependent on importing REEs from China, which holds a monopoly on these resources. One solution is to start recycling products containing these elements. Chemist Gianluca Torta is developing an industrial process to recover Rare Earth Elements from electric vehicle motors that contain permanent magnets made from these critical elements.

Fiorella Baldisserri, with a classical education background and a passion for art in all its forms, is a freelance photographer based in Bologna. Since 2016, she has attended courses on the history of photography and completed a one-year masterclass in photojournalism in Rome. One of her projects was included in Cortona On The Move - The Covid-19 Visual Project. Since 2017, she has received several awards in international competitions: Julia Margaret Cameron, BIFA, Fotografia Etica, TIFA, PX3, IPA, Phodar Biennale, Kolga, MIFA, Musa Fotografia, Roma Fotografia, ASA Project, ND Awards, Annual Ph.A, Belfast Ph, Refocus, Closer, Bresciani Visual Art, Belfast Ph.A.She currently exhibits a long term project “ Cinema on the Road “at the Biennial photography MonFest in Casale Monferrato (AL).
