                The Trail to Rauðafoss
One of the less visited of Iceland's waterfalls, the Rauðafoss requires a hike into the highlands of the country. The water of the Rauðufosskvísl flows over a veil-shaped, 60 meter high wall which is red from oxidized iron, which coloration characterizes the stream bed all the way to the river's miraculous source at Rauðauga (the Red Eye), a five or so meter diameter pool from which subterranean water flows to the surface. The landscape approaching Rauðafoss is characterized by sensuously shaped and, often, highly eroded landscapes, much of which is covered by the mosses, grasses, colorful flora, and miniature willow trees (Salix herbacea) characteristic of so much of Iceland. The trail to the waterfall is seen in this picture running diagonally from right to left and, at the plateau facing the waterfall, turns abruptly to the right and up a long, steep slope leading to the plateau over which the Rauðufosskvísl flows from its source.

I am an amateur photographer who rarely enters competitions, though has had several photographs selected for exhibition in the competitive Maine Photographic Show. I am a retired lawyer and law professor living in Maine. I received Honorable Mentions in the Annual Photography Awards for 2022 and 2023. While I am primarily a landscape photographer, a trip to Bhutan in 2024 has helped to refocus attention on photographs of people and foreign cultures.
