Buran spacecraft
Buran spacecraft
Set up in response to the American space program, the "Бура́н" space program was the Soviet Union's most ambitious project before its collapse.
In order to maintain a balance of power during this Cold War period, the Soviets decided to build 5 space shuttles, of which only 2 were completed, and where only one flew into orbit on November 15, 1988.
But lack of money and a highly unstable political regime meant that the remaining shuttles never saw the light of day, and the space program came to an end with the collapse of the USSR.
As a result, the 2 shuttle models "Buran" and "Ptichka" remained hidden in the Baikonur cosmodrome, frozen in time.
Unfortunately, in 2002, the roof of the hangar housing the "Buran" shuttle - the only one to have made an orbital flight - collapsed, destroying it forever.
However, in an abandoned hangar a few hundred meters away, lies the remnant of the "Ptichka" shuttle, which has become a priceless grail for urban explorers from all over the world.
