The last owls of Safety Harbor
The last owls of Safety Harbor
For the last seven years, a male great horned owl has been nesting with his female in a specific oak tree in a county park. Photographers from across United States show up in December/January to take pictures of their everyday progress. Around March, the three owlets were branching and doing well. One day, we arrived to find out one of them just fell and died and we suspected rat poison. After a necropsy that confirmed secondary poisoning from rat poison, every owls in that park died one after another. When the female, Emily died, it started a grass root effort to convince residents and businesses to ask their pest control company to change the way they were getting rid of rats around the area. This is a picture of Huey, Daisy ,and Louie, the last 3 owlets of Philippe Park in Safety Harbor.
