The poorest wealth - a symbol of exploitation
The poorest wealth - a symbol of exploitation
A girl stands up to her knees in polluted water in a Congolese mine.
The DRC is one of the richest countries in the world ranking 10th on the list of poorest. Rich because it has the world's largest resources of cobalt (74%). Poor because the population does not benefit from it. The outcome for them are destroyed houses, polluted water, poor working conditions, lunar landscapes and in some areas even cancer. The cobalt is needed for batteries. For the e-mobility that so many countries rely on. A country that not only suffers from the climate crisis but also from the climate protection measures.
Small, agile and in financial distress - is part of the job description. The choice therefore often falls on children, they can move well in the small mine pits. There is no time for school and often no protection regulations.
