Lava Field with Church
Lava Field with Church
This black wooden church, located on the southern coast of the Snaefellsnes Penninsula of Iceland , was built in 1848 in a location that had served as a local parish as long ago as 1703. As anyone who has been to Iceland knows, the natural landscape totally overwhelms the human-built environment that is present both in scale and beauty as this photograph attempts to convey. The church sits amidst the vast Budahraun lava field created by volcanic eruption approximately 8,000 years ago. The field is rich with flora and geological history and much is within a protected conservation area. The photograph was taken with a Canon RP, converted to take infrared photographs, such as the one entered here, with a 35 mm lens using a super color infrared filter (590 nm). The picture was taken on August 22, 2022 at approximately 4:20 PM.
Author
I am an amateur photographer who rarely enters competitions, though has had several photographs selected for exhibition in the competitive Maine Photographic Show. I am a retired lawyer and law professor living in Maine. I received Honorable Mentions in the Annual Photography Awards for 2022 and 2023. While I am primarily a landscape photographer, a trip to Bhutan in 2024 has helped to refocus attention on photographs of people and foreign cultures.
