a Room with Seaview
Architecture is celebrated for recording our cultures and reflecting who we are or want to be. The series captures architectural feats created by mostly illiterate men. These autodidact architects constructed homes with driftwood and discarded materials.
Though salt plays a crucial role in maintaining human health, harvesting it from the sea is a harsh job. The labourers work from sunrise to sunset, cannot escape the salty waters. Many send the meagre salary back home to parents and siblings, even sending offspring to further their education, securing a better future for generations to come.
‘a Room with Seaview’ is a cynical title with a critical eye on our contemporary models of living in a growing divided world. It is a window into the general climate change that doesn’t discriminate, knows no geopolitical borders, and cannot be averted with a vaccine. Here at the sea-salt-flats, survival is an art.

Author
“The artist Aljohara grew up in The Netherlands, she raised her family in various countries and four years ago she chose to settle in The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and restart her career in the arts.
She is one of these rare international cultural voices whose work is based upon her keen observations which she subsequently translates into her recordings. The versatile artist explores the cultural landscape as a tool for uncovering and registering the many colours and shades known to the Kingdom and in this way, she creates a reflecting composite of the intricate and spirited dynamic scenery of today’s Saudi Arabia. Her latest series ‘Shadows of the Past Foretelling the Future’ for which she has been awarded by the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Culture, and her series ‘Performance’ which has been awarded by the Royal Photographic Society, UK, are fine examples.”
