Traditional pig event
Traditional pig event
In some countries in Southern Italy it is still customary to raise one or two pigs for family consumption. Families usually gather with close relatives to carry out the slaughter and all the work associated with it.
From the division of the meat to the creation of the cured meats, everyone is committed to lending a hand, working with traditional techniques and collaborating together, including the children who experience this event as a party by being able to play with their cousins.
Furthermore, children are not afraid or shocked at the sight of blood and slaughter, they are used to recognizing the event as "necessary" to have good quality food at home. It is an incentive not to buy poor quality meat from intensive farming, where the animals are often mistreated.
A sense of respect towards food develops in families but society often sees these events as something cruel even though in ancient times it was normal to raise animals for one's own use. In this case, normal becomes abnormal.
